Learn the language of the cards

Start with what you notice. Meanings are a vocabulary for reflection, and your own observations give that vocabulary a context.

Look before you look up

Choose a card from your own deck or the library. Name three visible details: a gesture, a color, an object, or a direction. Describe them plainly before deciding what they mean. Different decks show the same card in different ways.

Use the deck as a map

The 22 Major Arcana explore broad themes such as change, choices, and responsibility. The 56 Minor Arcana bring those themes into everyday situations. Here, Wands invite reflection on effort and creativity; Cups on feelings and relationships; Swords on thoughts and communication; Pentacles on resources and daily life. These are starting associations, not fixed rules.

Build your own meaning

Read the reference meaning, then ask where it fits your situation and where it does not. A useful interpretation connects an image to a specific experience. You may record a different interpretation if it explains your observations better.

Try it for yourself

Check your understanding

What is a useful first step with an unfamiliar card?

Describe the details you can see. Observation gives you something concrete to connect with a reference meaning and your own experience.

How should a reference meaning be used?

As a starting point to test against your context. A reference offers possible themes. Your context and judgement shape the interpretation.
